"It is no longer adequate to simply mitigate environmental or social impact for economic benefit. A corporation has to prove it is leaving behind a visible and tangible improvement in the environment and in the social fabric of the community"
Alan Kreisberg, President, Western North America LaFarge Construction

A New Vision for MT Nemo

In early 2008, PERL began thinking about Mt Nemo and it's defining characteristics from an environmental, social and economic point of view. We agreed that we needed to imagine what it might look like - after the wrap up of quarrying operations after some 50 years on the Mt Nemo plateau.

To that end, PERL agreed that it's up to all stake holders in the community to decide this - and what better way than to engage them in a visioning exercise facilitated by world class experts in the field. PERL subsequently engaged the services of ResTerra Strategies a consulting company re-knowned for their expertise in the area of architecture and in helping people envision new possibilities for where they live. On Sept 18th 2008, PERL and ResTerra hosted the "Kick-off" meeting to get the ball rolling on this initiative. See the attached flyer for more details.

Burlington civic leaders have identified both a need and a desire for sustainable cultural and ecological development for citizens of our community and for visitors from across the region and country. Leadership has already brought us delightful examples of what is possible in projects such as the Burlington Waterfront Centre demonstrating that we can achieve a sustainable community on Mount Nemo, if we try and have the opportunity to work with exemplary practitioners.

Working in consultation with the public, Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL) wants to envision a new cultural and natural heritage future for Mount Nemo. With creative visioning we could imagine the possibilities of an outdoor amphitheatre for the arts, vineyard, an art gallery, observatories, trails, interpretive areas, and other opportunities for the site that are ecologically sensible, community-building and which showcase the best Burlington has to offer.

In demonstration of our commitment, PERL at its own initiative along with co-host ResTerra Strategies, invites you to participate in a Community Forum to explore and discuss possible options among local experts as well as hear from special guests Order of Canada architect Douglas Cardinal and his son Bret Cardinal.

In the coming months, look for updates on this page. As the vision for Mt Nemo evolves, it will be depicted by new green lawn signs as seen above. These are meant to depict in a positive way the values and characteristics that we, the local residents of Mt Nemo and residents of the city of Burlington hold dear. They will represent what we envision our area becoming.

By envisioning these, we will have created a common goal to strive towards. By sharing them, we will enhance our understanding and promote our desired outcome. By adopting them we will achieve our vision for the best possible Mt Nemo.

Together, we can create the future we all want to have!
